Quiet Quitting in Marriage: Why Couples Who Never Fight Still Split

Quiet quitting in marriage doesn’t start with a loud fight—it begins the moment two people fall silent.

Getting married is easy, but sustaining a marriage for a lifetime is proving to be a challenge in today’s world. In my opinion, divorces are becoming more common than marriages these days.

There can be many reasons for a divorce between a couple, such as issues with the partner, a major lie revealed only after marriage, conflicts between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, unemployment, a partner’s substance abuse, and, most notably, emotional apathy.

Quiet Quitting in Marriage

Have you ever wondered why a husband and wife might seek a divorce after just a few months or years of marriage, even when they have no specific complaints against each other and no arguments occur? Why does this happen?

Cases where couples decide to end their marriages due to emotional apathy are rising rapidly across the world. I am going to share my clear perspective on this matter, so please read on carefully.

👉 Have you ever wondered why love and romance can slowly fade after marriage, even when a couple still cares about each other? Explore the 5 reasons love fades after marriage and what couples can do to bring the romance back.

1) Why Do Couples Divorce Without Fighting?

In the early days of marriage, a husband and wife spend time together, share romantic moments, and even open up to each other about personal issues and family problems.

As time passes, the world perceives them as the perfect couple because they never seem to engage in quarrels or heated arguments. Yet, a few years later, such couples suddenly divorce, leaving their relatives and families shocked.

Upon learning of the divorce, people wonder: there were no fights or bickering, and both partners were completely faithful, so what could be the reason for the sudden split? Such speculation often gives rise to various rumours.

Some people might speculate that the husband was at fault, while others might blame the wife. However, the reality is quite different, something only the couple truly understands, and that reality is emotional detachment.

2) What Are the Signs of Emotional Apathy in a Marriage?

When a husband and wife stop sharing their problems with each other or disregard the issues they are aware of, it indicates that emotional apathy has taken root in their relationship.

In a state of emotional apathy, there are no quarrels or arguments between the couple. To relatives and family members, such a couple may appear completely calm and sensible.

The American Psychological Association notes that regular communication and checking in with your partner can help maintain a healthy relationship.

Emotional apathy can make a husband and wife feel bored with each other. In my view, they often feel, deep down, that there is no point in sharing their troubles or sorrows. As a result, they remain silent and limit their interactions to routine, mundane conversations.

Couples experiencing emotional apathy in their romantic relationship often find that emotional distance is growing between them for no apparent reason. They may also feel, deep down, that they have grown bored with one another and that the spark or joy their relationship once had is gone.

Some couples try to reignite the romance in such relationships, but if they do not receive the desired support from their partner, they may eventually decide to part ways.

3) Why Do Married Couples Start Living Like Roommates?

Couples suffering from emotional apathy do not immediately seek a divorce, as they care about their families and relatives. They likely care about their children as well.

Consequently, such couples often stop sharing their troubles with one another. I have even observed that despite this emotional apathy, the wife continues to cook and the husband continues to eat the meal. The only difference is that the husband stops praising the food she prepares, unlike in the past when he used to praise it.

Often, wives endure immense physical and mental suffering in silence, choosing not to confide in their husbands. They feel that sharing their pain would make no difference, as the bond they once shared no longer exists.

I have even come across couples who split every household expense, from electricity bills and groceries to their children’s school fees, with each partner contributing an equal share.

I have also noticed that when visiting such couples at home or seeing them at family gatherings, no one would suspect that their romantic relationship is actually affected by hidden emotional apathy.

To put it in my own words, these couples live together like roommates. They may share the same bed, but the romance between them has completely vanished.

They are couples who have stopped caring for each other within the home, yet continue to put on a facade of love when in the company of relatives and friends.

4) What causes emotional apathy to develop between couples?

When a man and a woman get married, they are overjoyed. In the early days, newlyweds happily cherish their romantic moments, both in private and in the eyes of the world.

So, what exactly happens between these couples that leads to emotional apathy? Let me try to explain the potential reasons from my perspective:

  • Emotional apathy arises in a relationship when a husband and wife repeatedly fail to overlook each other’s minor faults or issues.
  • I believe that after the birth of a child, some couples experience increased arguments, growing distance, and emotional apathy.
  • A poor financial situation is not the cause of emotional apathy in itself; rather, the belief that one’s financial standing is worse than that of others is what breeds this apathy in the relationship.

  • Comparing one’s own relationship with those of other couples can also lead to emotional apathy.
  • A few years into the marriage, a wife might constantly offer advice on trivial matters or frequently claim that marrying her husband was a huge mistake. If, in such situations, the husband either listens silently or simply tunes her out, it is a sign that emotional apathy has taken root in their relationship.
  • The stress of earning money can sometimes lead to emotional detachment in relationships. Therefore, learn to be content with what you have and how much you have.

My Perspective: Keeping Love Alive in Marriage

My perspective is that if couples keep a few things in mind, emotional apathy will never arise between them; therefore, please read this carefully.

  • Spend romantic time with your partner. Regardless of how many years you have been married or how many children you have, take some time to sit with your partner before going to sleep at night. Ask about their day, share a laugh, and avoid any conversation that might create tension between you.

The NHS also recommends open and honest communication, active listening, and regular check-ins as part of maintaining healthy relationships.

  • First, ask yourself: Is your relationship the same as it used to be? If not, think about how to restore it to its former state. There is no need to discuss the health of your marriage with others, as most people simply want to revel in a crumbling relationship and will likely advise you to divorce. Someone who genuinely cares about your relationship will instead encourage you to make a fresh start.
  • Parenting is a shared responsibility; do not place the entire burden of raising the child on just one person. After childbirth, some wives may become irritable for a while due to sleep deprivation and physical discomfort. In such situations, a husband should support his wife rather than argue with her. If you understand this, I believe emotional apathy will never take root in your relationship.
  • Even after years of marriage or having children, partners should continue to go on outings, watch movies, keep the romance alive, and make every effort to keep each other happy, ensuring that no distance ever creeps into the relationship.
  • There is no need to create social media reels to show the world how much you love each other; instead, ask yourself honestly if the love between you is truly as strong as it used to be.
Quiet Quitting in Marriage

Before considering divorce, make every possible effort, even a dozen times over, to mend a failing relationship.

Do not decide to divorce based on the advice of others. If you have children, you should reconsider divorce, as it can have a detrimental effect on their minds, something you might not fully grasp.

In my view, it is better to stay together, even if that involves arguments or heated exchanges, because love often lies hidden beneath such conflicts.

If you adopt a “quiet quitting” mentality regarding your marriage, remember that you will never find a partner capable of satisfying you in every possible way. Whenever you feel a sense of boredom, you might end up divorcing your next partner as well.

“Quiet quitting” in a marriage is not the right way to live life; I believe that if you follow this path, nothing can save you from ruin.
