What is depression, and what are its symptoms?
When a person sits alone and dejected for days, avoids talking to others, and remains lost in their own thoughts for hours, one can assume that they are suffering from depression or are on the verge of developing it.

What are depressed people like?
- Sitting alone and dejected somewhere in the house is a sign of depression.
- No matter how much you try to engage a depressed person, they remain dejected and lost in their own thoughts.
- A depressed person becomes so engrossed in their thoughts that they lose awareness of hunger and thirst.
- Irritability is often observed in the temperament of a depressed person, making them prone to anger.
- Depressed individuals generally dislike being approached or spoken to by others.
- They do not like taking advice from anyone because they prefer to remain lost in their own world—a world filled only with sadness.
- Some depressed individuals neglect grooming, such as getting haircuts or shaving; consequently, their long hair and unkempt beards can make them look disheveled or extremely untidy within a short time.

- If a task is assigned to a depressed person, they often fail to remember the details and repeatedly ask about the work; simply put, they tend to seek constant reassurance while performing any task.
- Depressed individuals often prefer staying in bed for long periods because they struggle to sleep at night. Although they lie in bed, they remain preoccupied with their thoughts for hours, preventing them from falling asleep until late at night.
- If they are watching a specific scene on their mobile phone and it appeals to them, they might watch that same scene repeatedly for hours without any apparent reason; in reality, their mind remains deeply occupied with other thoughts during these moments.
Why Are So Many Young People Suffering from Depression?
In today’s world, young people are the most frequent victims of depression, but why is that? Let me share some of the reasons why so many young people across the globe are suffering from depression.
1) Unemployment and Workplace Issues Are Major Causes of Depression Among Young People
Many believe that social media is the reason young people are becoming depressed, but I do not agree. While social media can be a contributing factor, it is not the root cause.

In the current era, educated young people are struggling to find good jobs. Unemployment is a major cause of depression.
There are many countries where young people suffer from depression simply because they cannot secure good employment.
Even those who do have good jobs may face depression if they do not receive promotions commensurate with their efforts, especially when compared to others.
If an individual works extremely hard but fails to get an increment or promotion while others do, they can easily fall victim to depression.
Always keep in mind that office politics surrounding increments and promotions can drive a hardworking person into depression.
2) Relationship Breakups Are Increasing Depression Among Young People
In my view, most young people mistake attraction for love, which is why they attempt to form romantic relationships with one another.
Whether male or female, most young people dream of having an ideal partner—a “dream boy” or “dream girl.”
Young people do fall in love and strive to nurture their relationships, but when these relationships fall apart, many of them succumb to depression.

A breakup can cause depression in anyone, not just young people; however, the impact depends largely on how serious one was about the relationship.
There are some young people who enter into and end new relationships every month without it affecting them at all.
In my opinion, there are several reasons why relationships end among young people, such as suspicion, betrayal by a partner, or other factors.
When a relationship ends, a person cannot simply forget their partner. They are haunted by memories of the moments they shared together. Dwelling on these memories leads to tears and despair, eventually resulting in depression.
3) How Social Media Affects Young People’s Mental Health
Social media is a medium that not only provides entertainment but also helps us go viral and become famous globally. Some social media platforms even pay us based on high view counts.
Most young people desire to go viral on social media. In the pursuit of virality, some create illegal videos and subsequently find themselves entangled in serious legal trouble.
I have seen young people become depressed when their videos, posts, or reels receive few likes or views. Some people always compare themselves with others on social media, and their moods fluctuate like a roller coaster.
Social media causes frequent fluctuations in young people’s moods, which is not a healthy thing.
Young women are particularly susceptible to depression caused by social media.
Different reasons for this include their videos or reels not going viral, their uploaded photos being misused, their lives being ruined by romantic traps, or their ruining their own well-being by constantly comparing themselves with others.

When young women upload a reel or video, they often expect it to go viral immediately; however, this rarely happens because every social media platform operates based on specific algorithms.
In the quest to make their reels or videos go viral, young women may perform provocative dances, wear revealing clothing that damages their reputation, and post content designed to arouse viewers.
The pursuit of views in this manner has ruined the lives of many girls and their families, ultimately leaving these young women suffering from severe depression.
In some countries where women do not work outside the home, they spend their time creating and uploading reels and videos; when these videos fail to go viral, they quickly fall victim to depression.
4) How Lack of Sleep Causes Depression in Young People
Many young people around the world stay up late at night, resulting in insufficient sleep. While some stay up late to study, the majority do so to use their mobile phones.

A lack of adequate sleep leads to various health issues, one of which is depression.
Although eight hours of sleep is essential, today’s youth rarely get that much rest.
Some young people are unable to sleep because their minds are preoccupied with various concerns—such as worries about their careers, achieving good grades in exams, relationship issues, or financial stress and family conflicts at home.
Those who lie in bed worrying often struggle to fall asleep for hours because they are consumed by thoughts, most of which are negative.
This negative thinking causes anxiety, eventually leading them to fall victim to depression.
How can young people overcome depression?
- Keep yourself busy with activities such as dancing or sports.
- Do not just sit at home or in a corner; step outside and go for a long walk. If there is a garden or jogging track nearby, go there for a walk.
- Struggling to wake up early? Do you feel like lying in bed and overthinking? If you feel this way, ask a family member to wake you up early and send you out for a morning walk.
- Young people suffering from depression may not feel like going to work or college; do not force them. Instead, show them motivational movies to help shift their mindset.
- Avoid staying alone; spend time with friends or family members to improve your mood.
- If the same thoughts keep recurring and making you anxious, share them with your family and friends so they can offer reassurance and help you break free from those thoughts.
- Wherever you go, do not sit silently alone; interact with people. Talking to others brings great relief to the mind.
- Watch comedy movies or TV shows and try to laugh.
- If there is a small child at home, sit or play with them; playing with a young child can bring great peace of mind.
- Do not worry by dwelling on negative thoughts about the future; what you imagine isn’t necessarily what will happen. Avoid burdening your mind with negative thoughts.
- Consult a psychiatrist and seek counselling (do this especially if the young person is suffering from severe depression).
