Plan 2 Jyotirlingas in One Trip Easily

1. Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Route
If you are embarking on a Jyotirlinga pilgrimage for the first time or traveling with children and elderly family members, you should head straight to Indore, a large, clean city in Madhya Pradesh.
Some Important Points:
- Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is located about 57 km from Indore, a journey of approximately one to two hours.
- Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is located about 81 km from Indore, a journey of approximately three hours.
- The route from Indore to Ujjain is excellent and has light traffic, whereas the route to Omkareshwar is narrower, hilly, and prone to traffic congestion.
- If you wish to visit both Jyotirlingas in a single trip, you should base yourself in Indore. Do not book hotels in Ujjain or Omkareshwar.
You can complete this trip in two days. We have briefly outlined how to do so below.
Day 1: Arrival in Indore and Trip to Ujjain
- Depart from Indore for Ujjain. First, visit Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, followed by Kal Bhairav. After these visits, you can explore many other places in Ujjain, such as Bada Ganesh, Harsiddhi Mata Temple, Ram Ghat, etc.
- Queues at Mahakaleshwar Temple can be long. To avoid exhaustion, visit the key tourist spots in Ujjain and return to Indore by evening.

Day 2: Trip from Indore to Omkareshwar
- Start early in the morning on the second day for the journey from Indore to Omkareshwar. Keep in mind that the drive takes 2 to 3 hours, and the route is often congested with traffic.
- Upon reaching Omkareshwar, park your car and take a boat ride to visit Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. (Alternatively, you can also reach the temple by walking across the bridge.)
- Expect long queues of devotees at the temple; therefore, it is advisable to visit Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga before exploring other places.
- Since Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is situated on a hill, ‘Palkhi’ (palanquin) services are available to help elderly visitors reach the top; do make use of this facility. Please note that the Palkhi service is a paid one.
- After visiting Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, proceed to Mamleshwar Temple to seek blessings from Lord Mahadev, as the pilgrimage is considered incomplete without this visit (according to the beliefs of devotees).
- Return to Indore before evening and visit local temples, such as Khajrana Ganesh.

2. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga and Somnath Jyotirlinga Route
If you are visiting the Jyotirlingas of Somnath and Nageshwar together, then head straight to Dwarka. Since Dwarka is included in the ‘Char Dham’ circuit of pilgrimage places, make sure to visit Lord Shri Krishna.
Some important points:
- The distance from Dwarka to Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is approximately 17 kilometres, a journey of just half an hour.
- The distance from Dwarka to Somnath Jyotirlinga is approximately 237 kilometres. By car, this takes about 4 hours. Alternatively, you can take an overnight train from Dwarka to Somnath.
- To travel to Somnath by train, you need to board a train bound for the city of Veraval.
- The distance from Veraval to Somnath is only 8 kilometres, a journey of half an hour.
It will take you just 4 days to complete the pilgrimage to both Somnath and Nageshwar Jyotirlingas in a single trip.
Below, we briefly outline how you can complete this journey smoothly and peacefully; please read the details carefully.
Day 1: Arrival in Dwarka
- Upon reaching Dwarka, check into a nice hotel and freshen up.
- Visit the Dwarkadhish Temple for darshan (worship). The temple tends to be very crowded, so please proceed with caution.
- After the visit, hire an auto-rickshaw to take you to all the famous landmarks in Dwarka.
- In the evening, attend the Aarti at the Dwarkadhish Temple; if it is too crowded, you can enjoy shopping in the local market instead.
Day 2: Travel from Dwarka to Nageshwar Jyotirlinga
- Travel from Dwarka to Nageshwar Jyotirlinga. Since the site can get crowded, it is advisable to wake up early and head straight there.
- A separate entrance has been constructed at the rear of the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple for the elderly; guide your elderly companions to use this entrance, as it is much less crowded.
- Do you enjoy beaches? If so, visit Shivrajpur Beach after your visit to Nageshwar Jyotirlinga.
- Visit Bet Dwarka, the Rukmini Devi Temple, and Gopi Talav only if you have sufficient time; otherwise, you can return to Dwarka and relax at your hotel.

Day 3: Travel from Dwarka to Somnath
- Wake up early and set out for Somnath. The route is incredibly scenic, but my advice is not to waste too much time making stops along the way.
- You will reach Somnath by afternoon. After freshening up at your hotel, hire an auto-rickshaw to take you around to all the tourist attractions in Somnath.
- If there are elderly people with you, suggest that they attend the evening Aarti at the Somnath Temple. If possible, you should also attend the evening Aarti at the temple.
Day 4: Somnath Jyotirlinga Visit and Return
- Get up early and depart for Somnath Temple. The temple complex is huge, so you will not experience much crowding or shoving, though you may see long queues of devotees.
- After praying to the Jyotirlinga, sit in the garden behind the temple and enjoy the sight of the ocean waves. Just like other devotees, you, too, can sit in the garden and chant “Om Namah Shivaya.”
- Do not forget to visit the old and original Somnath Temple, known as “Juna Somnath,” to seek blessings from the Jyotirlinga there.
